János Johan – first violinist, bandleader
János Johan is a lead violinist, chief first violinist and bandleader, and the artistic director of the Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra. Over the course of several decades, he has become one of the most recognized representatives of Hungarian Gypsy music, both in Hungary and on international stages.
He began his musical studies at a young age, then continued his professional development at the Talentum Vocational School and in the Rajkó Orchestra. In 2001 he passed his advanced professional exam; among his masters was the legendary violinist Sandor Rigó Buffo and Sándor Jároka.
During his career he has achieved outstanding results at numerous domestic and international competitions for first violinists and Gypsy orchestras. In 1997 he won first prize at the Gundel First Violinist Competition, in 2000 he received special recognition at the Millennium Golden Bow Competition, and in 2004 he took third place and a special prize at an international competition. Further significant professional successes and first prizes followed later.
More than a decade in the 100 Member Gypsy Orchestra
A defining chapter of János Johan’s professional path is linked to the world‑famous 100 Member Gypsy Orchestra. Between 2013 and 2026 he worked as the ensemble’s lead first violinist, representing Hungarian Gypsy musical culture at numerous large‑scale concerts in Hungary and abroad.
This period is an important part of his artistic career and of the decades of professional experience on which his current work is also built.
Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra – a new chapter
In 2026, János Johan’s professional career entered a new era. As chief first violinist and artistic director of the Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra, he is dedicated to preserving, passing on and presenting the values of traditional Hungarian Gypsy music on 21st‑century stages.
The repertoire of the Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra – internationally known as the Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra – includes, alongside traditional Hungarian Gypsy music and Hungarian popular songs, classical works, operetta, folk‑music arrangements and virtuosic instrumental performances.
One of the key aims of János Johan’s artistic leadership is to support the next generation: at the orchestra’s concerts, opportunities for performance are to be provided for young musicians and first violinists who play at a high professional level.
In recognition of his work, on 15 March 2024 he was awarded the Hungarian Silver Cross of Merit.
Today, at the heart of János Johan’s artistic activity lies the leadership of the Hungarian National Gypsy Orchestra, the preservation of Hungarian Gypsy musical traditions, and
